May 1998 -
I first met Dottie White many years ago when she came to see me about her nine-year old dyslexic son. She had been told that he might be able to learn a few "survival words" but not to expect much more.
Dottie did expect more. She knew her son was very bright and believed with all her heart that he could learn to read. Dottie went through training at the Stowell Learning Center in the Auditory Discrimination in Depth (A.D.D.) program. With weekly consultations at the Learning Center and great patience and understanding, she proceeded to teach her son to read. (Her son is now in college having graduated from high school with honors).
Dottie was a woman of great passion for people. She was not only determined that her son would read, but also that no other student within her sphere of influence should have to suffer from a reading disability.
She had a technique that worked and she made it a mission of love to spread it around to as many students as she could. Dottie taught privately and publicly, and through her efforts and enthusiasm, has gotten the A.D.D. program into at least 16 school districts.
Dotties love for people and learning has directly and indirectly touched hundreds of young people. She gave her students a reason to come to school and a hope for the future. She taught them to believe in themselves, never to give up, and to go out and share what they had learned with others.
Last March, we lost Dottie to a battle with cancer. It is a terrible loss for us, and a gift for Heaven where I believe she resides with the Heavenly Father she loved so much.
Dottie was a woman of amazing love and energy for her wonderful family, her friends, and her students. We will miss this truly gifted teacher who was an inspiration in every aspect of her life. |
